Some realtors tout green' credentials in tough market

Wouldn't you rather work with a Realtor who shares your values in environmental and social responsibility?" and sends its agents to environmentally friendly building courses. Last fall, Harry Norman Realtors in Atlanta had 48 Realtors certified by EcoBroker International, which educates Realtors on eco-friendly homes and marketing. Meanwhile, individual Realtors are carving "green" niches for themselves: Celeste Karan, of Keller Williams Realty in Chicago, started www.greenhomechicago.com, a site where she lists properties and promises "to help home buyers understand what truly constitutes a 'green building.' " Such agents say their knowledge of environmentally friendly designs and materials can help clients in several ways. First, the brokers will link interested buyers to homes that are built with eco-friendly features, like solar power and energy-efficient appliances.

Halt to school furniture money upsets D.M. parents, teachers

We're down to a very basic, bare-bones school being built. We were thinking, 'OK, there's the furniture allotment, we'll still have that.' "

He said the school now won't be nearly as nice as others that have already been completed.

Good said officials are "scraping to find money" for repair and maintenance across the district, which he points out has a "glut" of furniture in a warehouse and 67 semitrailer trucks. Some of the furnishings are from closed schools and some are donated.

Good said some elementary schools similar in size to Woodlawn had received money for furnishings: Greenwood, 316 37th St., $149,000; Perkins, 4301 College Ave., $110,000; and Windsor, 5912 University Ave., $111,000.

Jaynette Rittman, principal at the newly renovated Garton Elementary School, was uncertain how much her school received for furnishings, but said student tables and chairs; teacher desks and chairs; bookshelves; filing cabinets; and cafeteria tables were bought.

MUSCATINE, Iowa — A penny lying on the sidewalk is a common sight, as if the single cent is no longer worth the effort it would take to pick it up.

But educators and administrators throughout Muscatine County have learned how far a penny can go over the past

eight years.

A drive past any of the county’s four school districts provides examples of the way pennies have become million-dollar projects in Muscatine County.
