Stylish 1919 townhouse

Just like scoping out the perfect shot, professional photographers Joseph and Anne Sachs allowed themselves time to find exactly what they wanted in a home. Having rented for many years in Baltimore's Roland Park neighborhood, they were seeking something with similar ambience.

"We wanted something with character," said Anne Sachs, co-owner, along with her husband, of Artful Weddings by Sachs Photography. "A classic-style house, with hardwood floors, high ceilings and a fireplace."

What they eventually found was a three-story red brick Georgian-style townhouse on Newland Road in the southeast corner of the city's Guilford neighborhood. Built in 1919, the home features slate roofing, white wood trim, a screened front patio porch and a third floor with dormers.

As a result, last month's national referendum on the constitution was a key factor in determining whether or not the majority of the Iraqi people agree with the vision of the New Iraq —or reject it entirely.

The narrow margin by which the referendum passed makes clear there's no definitive answer to that question.

Until just two days before the polls opened, the leadership of most Sunni groups were once again encouraging their followers to boycott the vote. Last-minute talks and promises of immediate amendments convinced the largest of them, the Iraqi Islamic Party, to encourage their supporters to vote “Yes." A day after the announcement, its headquarters in Baghdad was attacked by a bomber, underscoring the fracture even among homogenous groups.

In contrast to their leadership's decision to adopt the new constitution, Sunnis from the provinces of Anbar and Salah El-Din turned out in huge numbers and voted it down.

This second admissions hurdle is as important as gaining entrance into the university. Known often as a "progression requirement," it is one of the dirty little secrets in academe.

Great music, good cause

And he feels there will always be a place for folk.

"Popular music revolves around stark, realistic images of society today," he said. "Folk music is like a painting. Folk music is like art."

Having just released his 12th CD, "Blue Roads, Red Wine," May is perhaps one of the area's best-known folk and Celtic performers. He's a regular at Kells Irish Pub in Portland, as well as the Horse Brass Pub where the birthday party that spawned Winterfolk was held 20 years ago.

Don Younger, owner of the Horse Brass Pub, said May continues to draw large crowds when performing at the pub.

"It's his voice," Younger said. "He has one of the most beautiful voices.

"He's got a reputation well beyond this place," Younger said. "He has fans who have followed him for 25 years and has new ones that have just found him.
