Republican scramble turns to S.C.

GREENVILLE, S.C. - It's been just a little more than two weeks since Mike Huckabee's breakthrough victory in the Iowa caucuses. But the way the Republican presidential race has been going, it seems a lifetime ago.

So he is eager to pick up win number two in today's South Carolina primary. And with polls showing him closing in on John McCain, Huckabee sounds increasingly confident he will be able to do it, weather permitting.

While a daylong rain is predicted for most of the state, ice and snow are in the forecast for up-country South Carolina. The region is home to many of the evangelical Christians whose support is vital to Huckabee, people like the Hoyt family.

"No matter the weather, I'll be voting," said Mark Hoyt, who came to hear the candidate at the technical college in Greenville, accompanied by wife Leslie and daughter Alyssa, 13, for whom seeing Huckabee was her home-school history lesson of the day.

LOCAL ECONOMY: Staffing may have soft year Housing recovery's pace ...

Economists and employment consultants are predicting a soft year ahead for hiring in Las Vegas and Nevada, as sustained lethargy in the housing market combines with slow growth in the resort sector to cap expansion ambitions among area businesses.

Researchers at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas' Center for Business and Economic Research are forecasting 2.1 percent job growth for Southern Nevada in 2008, while analysts at the state's Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation said they expect job formation to clock in at 1.9 percent statewide next year.

Those numbers are well below the state's 5 percent and 6 percent job-growth rates of 2005 and 2006, but they're an improvement on the 1 percent pace of recent months.

The employment department isn't expecting a dramatic turnaround in job growth because economists there predict new jobs in residential construction will be hard to come by for much of 2008.

Johnson, Kimberlin chat online

It depends on the type of previous issues and what was the final outcome.

Bill Kimberlin: I understand how some people might be confused over what took place many years ago in the municipal court. However I have no record as the case against me and the others was dismissed. It was a learning experience and everyone has grown and moved on. So yes it is OK to vote for me.

TJ: What changes are you prepared to make as priority and when will they take effect?

Bill Kimberlin: When elected I will immediately make the following changes: remove all social security numbers from public documents; make sure all court documents are processed in a timely manner; make all court documents available on a user-friendly Web site like all other counties in the state; begin a process to collect all outstanding court costs and fees owed to taxpayers of Erie County

Barbara Johnson: The first change is to get the records online for public viewing and that will take place as soon as financing is available.
