Hotel furnishings on the rebound

When I was in my mid-20s, I was living in London, making almost no money and staying in a dumpy, damp and cramped flat directly above the train tracks. As poor as I was, and as rough as my living conditions were, I had original artwork hanging on my wall, I had a flashy stereo and I slept on luxurious Frette linens every night. I wasn't living beyond my means, and no, I wasn't robbing banks, either. I just knew how to score some cheap goods when the local hotels were redecorating their rooms.

You don't have to go begging at the back doors of hotels to get great furniture and accessories at rock-bottom prices. You see, when hotels renovate, they usually sell their out-of-date and worn furnishings to large liquidators. These companies resell the goods at huge warehouses located across the country.

Tension lingers at Marble Rock Council session

But Merfeld later drew up a second agenda and hand-delivered it to council members Sunday in addition to posting it at City Hall. That agenda included some of the same items that were on the first agenda but did not include appointment of a city attorney as the first agenda did.At the beginning of the meeting, Merfeld read a statement to the council."I will not consider any appointment for city attorney until all of the members of the City Council and the citizens of Marble Rock have been fully informed concerning the possible appointees, such as hourly fees, travel expense, availability for meetings, retainer fees, experience and more," he said.Merfeld also said he was not going to ask for approval of the agenda for that night but proceed directly into the meeting."There will be no prior comments allowed by any of the members of the City Council as they will more than likely result in the city’s urgent business not being addressed," he said."You can’t just sit there on your bully pulpit and dictate to us," Handley said.Engelhardt, Wells and Handley voted to approve the first agenda that was posted.

Evidence of industry 'greening' at AIME 2008

A strong showcase of environmentally friendly products at the tradeshow for the business events industry next month is further evidence of the rapid 'greening' of the industry. Leading the charge is the event itself, AIME 2008, held in Melbourne on 19 - 20 February, which has announced it will be Australia's first Climate Neutral(tm) exhibition.

The Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre, an exhibitor and the event's venue, will showcase its new Melbourne Convention Centre, which is the first convention centre in the world to have achieved a '6 Star Green Star' environmental rating.

Some of the environmental features include a black water recycling plant, solar panels, energy saving controls on lighting, and having smart air conditioning.

Another leading international venue to feature at AIME, the Vancouver Convention and Exhibition Centre, also has an extensive environmental program.

Los Angeles Angels

He wants to go from a closer who recorded 85 saves in 99 chances over the last three seasons into the Cubs rotation as a starter.

Dempster's goal will be to pitch 200 innings, a plateau he reached three times while a starter with the Marlins and Reds from 1998-2003.

"Dempster wants to start. We're going to let him compete. If he shows us midway through spring training that he can do it, then we'll figure out the back end of it [the rotation]," Piniella said.

ROLEN A DISTANT MEMORY (4:12 p.m. ET)
The Cardinals wasted no time handing out Scott Rolen's old number.

Newly signed reliever Ron Villone arrived at spring training camp Wednesday and was given jersey No. 27, previously worn by the third baseman dealt to Toronto in the offseason.

German Firm To Bring 289 Jobs

A German company that makes compressors for industrial air-conditioning and refrigeration equipment is planning to open a manufacturing facility employing 289 people in the East Syracuse area, state officials say.

Gov. Eliot Spitzer mentioned the plans by Bitzer Scroll in his State of the Upstate address Jan 16 in Buffalo, but he made no mention of it when he spoke later the same day to the Greater Syracuse Chamber of Commerce's economic forecast luncheon.

A Bitzer Scroll representative said Monday the company was planning a formal announcement about its plans and he could release no details until the announcement was made.

State and local officials would normally make a big deal when a manufacturer decides to open a plant and create nearly 300 local jobs.
